What is makicuna's pairing program?

The Pairing Program is an initiative by Makicuna aimed at fostering closer relationships between coffee producers, roasters, and the importer (Makicuna). The program connects a roastery with a producer for a minimum of three years, agreeing on a minimum order quantity, setting goals and mutually beneficial prices.

The objectives are:

For producers: Reduce the pressure of finding buyers each harvest, allowing them to focus on improving quality and obtaining better prices.

For roasters: Secure a reliable supply chain and demonstrate to customers the traceability and positive impact of their sourcing.

For Makicuna: Achieve financial stability, enabling more resources to be allocated to helping producers meet their goals and improve their farms.

Participation involves selecting a producer partner from Makicuna’s network in Ecuador, committing to a minimum of  a three-year relationship, and agreeing to a contract detailing prices, payment terms, and responsibilities. The program offers regular updates, priority picks from your partner’s offering, marketing materials, and opportunities for direct contact and farm visits with the producer.

The Pairing Program’s Partners at Origin are only the producers with whom we have a long standing and close relationship.

Benefits for Roasters:

  1. Stable Supply Chain: By committing to a long-term partnership, roasters secure a consistent and reliable source of high-quality coffee. This stability helps them plan their production and marketing strategies more effectively.

  1. Traceability and Transparency: The program allows roasters to trace the origin of their coffee, providing detailed information about the producers and their farming practices. This transparency is increasingly valued by consumers who are interested in the story behind their coffee.
  1. Marketing Advantage: Roasters can use the partnership as a selling point, showcasing their commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainable practices. This can enhance their brand image and appeal to socially conscious consumers.
  2.
  3. Quality Improvement: With producers focusing more on quality rather than constantly seeking new buyers, roasters are likely to receive better-quality coffee over time. This can enhance the flavor profiles and consistency of their coffee offerings.

  1. Direct Engagement: The program facilitates direct communication and visits to the farms, allowing roasters to build personal relationships with producers. This can lead to a deeper understanding of the production process and potentially foster innovation and collaboration.
  2.

Benefits for Producers:

  1. Market Security: Producers gain a guaranteed buyer for their coffee over a set period, reducing the uncertainty and financial instability associated with fluctuating market conditions. This security enables them to plan and invest in their farms with confidence.

  1. Focus on Quality: With a committed buyer, producers can focus more on improving the quality of their coffee rather than expending resources on marketing and sales efforts. Better quality can lead to higher prices and more recognition in the market.

  1. Financial Stability: The agreed-upon prices and minimum order quantities provide a predictable income stream, helping producers manage their finances more effectively and invest in sustainable farming practices.

  1. Support and Resources: The financial security provided by the program allows Makicuna to allocate more resources towards supporting producers. This support can include technical assistance, training, and access to better farming equipment and inputs.

  1. Relationship Building: Developing a long-term partnership with roasters can create a sense of community and mutual support. Producers can benefit from the shared knowledge and experience, as well as the potential for collaborative projects that enhance productivity and sustainability.

Overall Impact:
